New Year's Day dawned cold and snowy, before the sun came out for a while to say hello and melt some of the snow, but then again, the day turned cloudy and blustery again with more snow that afternoon and evening.
After a breakfast of french toast with blueberries and bacon, we stayed in our pajamas and watched movies all day, and as is to be expected on lazy days like that, we were feeling hungry again for an afternoon snack.
It was still too early for the tomato basil soup and grilled cheese sandwiches we were making for dinner, so I sliced some gouda and a tart, crunchy apple and sprinkled it with lemon juice and cinnamon, and then popped popcorn in coconut oil. I tossed the hot popcorn with a few spoonfuls of my homemade hot chocolate mix (which I actually sifted over the popcorn with a mesh strainer for even coverage), a pinch of cayenne pepper and coarse salt.
You might think chocolate powder on popcorn sounds strange, but it was a totally yummy combination with the slight sweetness of the powdered mix and a little heat from the cayenne pepper. A perfectly cozy snack for a holiday at home.
